This charge was made by Mr. St. John Ervine, the dramatic eritic in a speech which he dell vered at the Fritish Drama League Conference at Caxton Hall, West- minster.

The delegates were discussing playwrights' fees, and Mr. S. II. Crouthor, of the Huddersfield Thespians, had put forward motion expressing the view that the time had arrived for the aboli- tion of the flat rate fee for amateur play-producing societies, which do not contribute to charity, and that the League should make a re- newed effort to establish payment on the basis of gross receipts.
