Rugby, Dec. 7.

Sepoy Pola Ram, of the 5/2 Pun- abi Regiment stationed at Whit- field Barracks, was charged be fore Mr. J H. B. Nihill at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday with attempted murdar,

Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith appeared for the Crown, while Capt. Middle- ton, of the Regiment, occupied a seat on the Bench.

In his opening Mr. Whyte-Smith said that the wounded man was still in a serious condition and was anable, to appear. It is doubt- fui whether it would be of any use to adjourn the case as the man was in such, a condition that it would be some considerable time before he would able to appear.

A detailed statement to Parlia ment by the Financial Secretary to the Treasury shows that the amount per head of the population raised by taxation and expended on public services is £20. 158. 6d. Of this, £8. 23. Od. is applied to Nthe National Debt services, and £5. 10s. Od. to the Civil Estimates. The defence services cost £2. 148. Od. per head. Both men, continued Mr. Whyte- Smith, were In B Company, the wounded man a Subadar and the accused, a sepoy. The former had. his quarters in a block of build- ings which was occupied entirely by Indian officers. Each person's quarters were self-contained, and the Subadar possessed two rooms, a lavatory and a yard..

The front room was occupied by the Subador himself, while the orderly slept. in the rear room. The front door was hever locked, except, when both the officer and orderly were out

It would be proved that the ac cused was a Dogra, and that he possessed 'a cap and also that he was clean shavou on the date of the perpetration of the crime.

The first investigations carried but were to find the owner of the hatchet, and it was discovered that the instrument was purchas ed from an ironmonger's shop in Tervois Strect that game adı, nočá by two Indians. Being a friend he went into the shop, and actually as- afsted the accused in purchasing. the hatchet, which Ram Singh; would say was taken away by tho prisoner,

In view of the statement made by the defendant, said Mr. Whyte- Smith, that explanation was no- copted.

With regard to the motive of the crime, there would be little evi- dence to show that the accused probably bore a certain amount of | enmity, towards the Subadag, and that revenge was probably the cause of the attack.
