TYPHOON VICTIMS.

PEDESTRIANS ELECTRO- CUTED-IN YAUMATI

The September typhoon was re- called at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon when Mr. J. H. B. Nihill and a jury held an enquiry into the deaths of two pedestrians who were electrocuted during the height of the "blow" in Shanghai Street early on the morn-

of the 27th.

was composed of Messrs. A. P. Bungey (foreman), Chat Ngan-ting and Chai Yik-kang. Mr. D. J. Lewis appeared on be- half of the Hongkong Telephone. Company, and Mr. M. H. Turner watched the proceddings on behalf of the China Eight and Power Co. Ltd.

Speaking on behalf of the Tele- phone Company, Mr. Lewis bald that whatever the result of the enquiry his company felt the great- est sympathy for the relatives of the two deceased persons.

The Coroner explained to the jury that the enquiry was an in- vestigation into the deaths of a' Chinese male and a seven-year-old female, who both met their deaths in Shanghai Street, where they were found, with pieces of plectric wire.coiled round their bodies.

The medical evidence would show that the cause of death was elec- trocution.

On the day in question, continued the Coroner, a typhoon was blow- ing and it would be recalled that the time the two persons were killed the wind was at its height.

It was suggested that the wire which, was found in contact with the bodies of the two persons, was the property of the Hongkong Tele phone Company. That wire be- came dislodged and was blown into the street. It became a live wire and tearsed the death of the two Chinese, or at least that was the presumption.

The China Light and Power Co. Ltd., were involved in the case in that at the place where the two dead persons were found, wires of both companies crossed the road.. The wires of the Telephone Com-- pany crossed the street above those of the Electric Company. The wires bolonging to the latter Company. were not, however, blown down.

Both these concerns, added Mr. Nihil, were public utility com- panies and should an accident occur it was for him, as Coroner, to make an enquiry into the causes of the deaths of any victims and it was also in the interests of the two utility companies that the jury should thoroughly enquire into the present case.

After kalling evidence of post mortem examinations, Dr. Ip Kam- wah, medical officer of the Kwong. Wah Hospital stated that he was
