SOUTH SEAS ROMANCE.

SUIT FOR OWNERSHIP OF CORAL ISLAND.

The romance of the South See; isa leading feature of a case now pending in the high court of American Samoa, involving the ownership of Swains Island, also known as the Island of Olosega, and sometimes called Quiros Is- land.

The island waa annexed recently to the territory of the United States by act of congress, and for administrative purposes attached to the government of American Samoa.

The island, which is about three. miles long and one broad, with the centre a lagoon, is about 250 miles north of Samoa. It is a coral atoll lying near the Union group of is. lands.

Bighty years ago there was a` few coconut palms on the island but it has been planted with a great number of coconuts and now yields a fine income.

Ell Jennings.

For the past 70 years it has. been settled by Eli Jennings, a citizen of America, and his dea- cendants.

Their occupation of the island has not been disturbed. However, a Frenchman named Sula Tyrell. had settled on the island before Jennings, and his decendants are claiming the Island, and are pre- senting their claims to the high, court.

Tyrell had built houses on the island and had established a boll- ing down station for rendering most of the coconut into oll.

"Loving. Greeting."

Tyrell had other islanders em- ployed. He took to wife & Tokelan woman and had a son called Kalofa

("Loving Greeting").

In the year 1856 Tyrell with his wife went to other island to pur chase coconuts

They left their son, then over eight years old, on the island with the people who worked. Tyrell was murdered a few months later on Penhryn island.

In the meantime, Tyrell's people were expecting his daily return, when Ell Jennings with two other white men and some islanders ar rived, bringing lumber and mate- rial for houses.

They landed on the island op- posite the Tyrell settlement. The lagaon intervened and they could not cross.*

The Tyrell people were afraid;, and finally decided to send over the boy, Kalofa, as a means of letting the strangers know that a white man owned: the island,

Intermarriage.

Ell Jennings returned to the Tyrell settlement with the boy and on making enquiries learned that the fair haired youngster was the son of Tula Tyrell who owned the island who then was visiting other. Islands but was expected home, at any time.

Jennings asked permission to put up his house, but the man in charge refused. M

Jennings and the other whito men insisted on erecting the houses and with threats of viol- ence compelled the Tyrell people to assist him,

He informed the falanders that Kalofa would be adopted by him and would be called his eldest son

The boy lived with the Jennings family, and later married Jen- ninga daughter,

It is the descendants of that couple who now are claiming the island. It has been learned that..... Tyrell was killed, several months' before Jennings appeared on the faland
