FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1926.

Help.

I believe that the very question- inga to. which Christianity is süb jected at the present time may really be a holp, forcing, us, to look more closely at our religion and to try to think through more Hwa Sheng Kung Hui was open-carefully the meaning and mos- od yesterday at St. John's Catha- dral Hail, the Right Reverend the Bishop of Victoria being in the chair

In view of prevailing conditions, there was a good attendance of. delegates from the mainland in addition to the representatives from the various churches "in Hongkong.

At the opening meeting of the Synod the Bishop of Victorin nd- dressed the assembled delegates

as follows:

We come together to-day for the fifth meeting of our Diocesan Synod, Our numbers are smaller than they usually are on account of difficulties of travel but I um sure that it is read that we should meet at such time as this to take: stock of our position. I am par- ticularly glad that we have with us to-day a delegate from the Mandarin speaking part of the Diocese, because I am sure that in. this part of 'China we may look by God's blessing for.considerable developments in the near future. We must work for the time when the Mandarin speaking provinces of Yunnan and Kweichow will form a separate diocese.

We last came together in April, | 1925. The seventeen months that have elapsed have been a time of difficulty" and testing for our Church-conditions vary greatly In different parts of this Diocese: between. for instance, Yunnan ard Canton, between Nanning and. Pakhol and Hongkong, but as I take a broader view of the work as a whole I feel there is much to encourage. It has often been prov- ed that difficulties are a prelude to progress. I have read with much interest the report on the "Confer-- ence on the Church in China to-- day beld in Shanghai at the be ginning of this year. If you have not read that report I would re commend you all. to do so.

An Impressive Point.

I do lieve that attempts to rush towards unity will defeat their own ends but that patience artd continuous work towards unity/will be rewarded.

We are forced to consider many problems at the present time, the greatest question of all is "Has Christianity got a saving messigo for the world as it in to-day " My answer is that if you take any large: viow of human life, it is plain there is insistent need for the Christian ethic and that unless our national and international probleme ate faced in the spirit of Christ, nation will continue to war against nation and class against class, until it may well, be our modem civilization itself will perish. The only alternative to this incessant, warfare is a recogni- tion by all men that we are all children of the Father, Who lins,a place for each and all in His great family.

What I want to stress at the very outset is that the success of Chris tianity can only be a spiritual suc- coss. To get our organisation right is very poccssary but it is not, the all important thing. I was talking this week with Bishop Roots, of Hankow, (Chairman of our House of Bishops) and I asked him what "ho thought most needed stressing at (Continued on Page 10.)

One of the points which impressed itself on my mind was this, Dr. John Mott, who was present at this Con- ference and who has spent nearly forty years of his life travelling from country to country, holding Conferences with Christian" lead- ers in different parts of the world.. pointed out at the Conference that this was his sixth visit to China, M each visit having been paid after

I an interval of five or six years. Reviewing the progress that had

S been made by the Christian. E Church in China since his first

S visit thirty years ago he said he was sure that we should face the

-12 future with hope, that if we steadily press on, in spite of our difficulties, a new area for the P Christian movement in China will dawn; our very difficulties may be our salvation. He drew a con- trast between, the World Confer-D ence at Edinburgh in 1910, when out of twelve hundred delegates. only some six or seven were na- tionale from the different coun tries where Christian missions had been planted and between a gathering of a similar kind which it is proposed should be held, possibly in Jerusalem, within a short while. In such a gathering the proportionate représentation would be wholly different. The reason for the change is obvious.
