The party of six Chinese bishops elect who, as reported yesterday, are on their way from North China to Rome, where they will be con acerated by the Pope, were ontor- tained by the Chinoso Catholic community in the Chinese Catholic Young Men's Club last night,

The Bishop of Canton and the Prefect of Kongmoon came to the Colony especially for the colebrd tions.

Bishop Valtorts, the Rov, Father Spada, Rev. Bro. Almar, "Arch- bishop Constantini, who is accom- and panying the bishops-elect, other local Catholic priests, were among the large number of person's present.

The six bishops-elect are:-Mon- Bighors Chiu (Chibi!)..Sun (Chih- li), Shing (Hupch), Chu (Klang- su), Wu (Cheklang) and Chan (Shansi).

China Honoured.

Mr. Wo Fo-shing, speaking in the northern dialect, addressed the visitors in the following terms:

The news of the elevation to the Episcopal honours of the first six Chinese bishops his been very glad tidings for us" Catholics and for our country in general, as we consider it a great honour which the Holy Father has paid to China. We greet you therefore here on your passage to Rome, not only as dutiful children of the Cathidlic Church, but also as loyal citizdris of the Republic of China,

We are thankful to the Holy Father who has chosen you as bishops, and, moreover, is giving you-and also to ourselves--a of affection by. particular mark calling you to Rome where he him- self wishes to give you personally the Episcopal Consecration.

We are glad. and proud to be Christians. For this, we know we are indebted to those generous missionaries, who, in continuation of the work of the first apostles of Christ, who were sent to preach to all nations, came abroad to China to preach the Gospel. We are thankful to them for their la- bours and their sufferings, as we know that many of them have even given their blood for this noble ehuse, thus preparing the coming of what we have the fortune to Witness to-day, the coming of the first Chinese bishops.

Expressions of Devotion. Now, to you, noble countrymen of ours, we express our devotion and respect, and we wish you n good voyage and a speedy return. We also promise to pray for you that, there in Rome, on the Tomu of the First Pope Saint Peter, from whence, in the course of centuries, missionaries were sent to all the countries of the world to preach the same Christ and the same Gös- pel that makes us all brethren, you too find the strength, the. and the mission to come grace, back and be the apostles of China, where we are sure that your work' of spreading the Gospel and win- ning our country to Christ will be the greatest factor of that peace, tranquillity and prosperity of which we are so badly in need.

We take this occasion of your going to Rome to ask you to pre sent to the successor of Saint. Peter our sentiments of unlimited loyalty to him as the only: Head of the true Church of Christ, the Catholic Church.

·Representatives from various local Catholic institutions, Bishop Val- tortu, the Bishop of Canton and the Protect of Kongmoon also addressed the gathering. It was pointed out to those present by the numerous speakers that this was the first ocension that China has had her own people consecrated, and the hope was expressed that the Chinese Catholics of Kwangtung would in the near future present a representa tive for consecration. This was a unique occasion in the history of the Catholic Church.
