INDIAN SERGEANT

MOLESTED.

ASSAULTED AND DISARMED,

BY CHINESE:

An attack made on an Indian ser- geant,attached to the Yaumati Station, during the early hours of the morning of August 10, while · on duty in Waterloo Road, was de- Lucribed before Mr. J. H. B. Nihill at the Kowloon Magistracy yester- day afternoon when two Chinese appeared on a charge of highway robbery with an alternativo charge of assault.

In his ovidence Sergeant Jagar Singh, stated that he went on duty at 4 am on August, 10, and had beon detailed for No. 2 beat which Included waterloo Road. An hour after leaving the station witness was leaning against the side of a nullah in Waterloo Road, near the seafront. Although the street lamp had been extinguished, flvo minutes previously the locality was still wrapped in darkness.

Two Chinese wore noticed to approach witness from the direc- tion of the small pier at the end of the road. Coming up to wit- ness, one of the mon-the first de- fendant greeted him with pito ayn (good morning) and when the sergeant replied to the greeting. the man asked him what salary he received. Witness told him he was paid $40 per month and added that it was no business of the intruder's. The man was told to go away but ho replied that it was still dark and he was unable to get his boat."

During the conversation the ser cond defendant had walked away and gone into Shanghai Street! Suddenly some one grabbed the sergeant from behind and at the same time the first defendant struggled with witness, who was knocked down and assaulted.

The unknown assailant made"a grab for witness' revolver holster and after a struggle, gained pos "session of the weapon. The man- then freed himself and ran away. The first defendant was about to follow but witness knocked, him down. and Д further struggle ensued. The sergeant blow his police whistle for help and with the arrival on the scene of a coxswain of the Water Police, the first defendant was ar- rested.

Witness suffered from a number. of injuries which included a lost

tive to the officer in charge of the Station on his return, he was sent to the Government Civil Hospital/ for treatment, being detained for eight days before he was dis charged.

"Corroborative.ovidence was given by the coxswain of the part he took in efecting the arrest of the first defendant and the case was ad- journed.
