THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

FRIDAY, AUGUST

1926.

READY TO OPEN UP.-Here is the first full view of the U.S. submarino S-51, obtained as the water was drained out of her dry dock and Navy workmen prepared to enter and bring out the bodies of the crow who perished at their posts. "Notice the. crumpled prow, the great gash in her side where the City of Rome struck. Two of the pontoons that flouted her to the Brooklyn Navy Yard can be seen, and the half-masted flag. The ship cost $2,500,000, and can be reconditioned, officials estimate, for $750,000.

THE MORTAL WOUND-This great gash in the side of the 8-51 just abaft the coming tower, was cut by the prow of the City of Rome, when submarine and steamer collided off Block Island, last autumn, and was the direct cause of her sinking. It opens into the battery room. Notice the length of the gash, more than three times the height of the man on deck,

Photo shows, the Falcon towing the S-51, which is swung between the heavy, pontoons to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The crumpled conning tower of the sub, indicated by arrow, can be seen between the forward pontoons.
