RUSSIAN GIRL DIES,

A Russian girl died of cholera after attempting to commit suicide by drowning herself in the Whang- poo River. She was pulled out of the water alive but died yesterday from swallowing the water which is infected with cholera germs.

Dr. W. S. New, and Dr. W. L. New, both graduates of American medicul colleges, have launched a campaign to educate the lower class Chinese in the city with re- ference to the danger of drinking impure water. The Ricsha' Mis. sion has placed wooden containers filled with boiled water at con- venient points so that the coolies can drink with safety.

MANILA CIGAR- MAKERS STRIKE.

MEN'S SAVINGS EXHAUSTED.

Unless financial help is extend- ed to the 4,000 striking cigar work- ers in Manila, they will be forced to return to work on any conditions, it was learned at labour headquar- ters, says the Munila Bulletin. Contributions already have been solicited from all possible sources by a relief committee of the union, and still the problem of feeding the families of the workers grows. Savings are exhausted.

Owners of factories, represent- ed by the secretary of the Manila Tobacco Association. Mr. Antonio G. Escamilla, and representatives of the strikers have met in confer- ence, with both sides striving to stand firm Owners are willing, however, to let the strikers return at the usual wages, providing working hours are extended ac cordingly.

Several days ago a relief com- mittee composed of Jose Ilagan, chairman, Felipe A. Denuido, secretary, and Isidro A. Divino, treasurer, was appointed by the strikers' union" to take charge of relief work. City councillors, re- presentatives and senators were called upon for contributions to the fund and did what they could. Other political leaders and gov- ernment officials when were ask ed for help. Money, rice, bread, and other things of material value were donated, but not enough was obtained,

Labour leaders and persons in close touch with the progress of the strike, admitted the serious ness of the situation and said an

Rugby, Aug. 12. The Prime Minister, who came to London from the country this

Meanwhile, Mr. Cook. the Miners' Secretary, in speeches and articles, is urging the miners to give the Executive Committee ntenary powers, presumably with the object of enabling overtures to be made for a recpering of the negotiations.
