Like the earth and all the planets, the sun rotates on its Axia, but while the earth's, rota- tion is the same all over-tone, re- volution in any latitude occupy- ing 23 Hours 66 minutes 4.1 seconds-it has long been known that, the time of one revolution of the sun varies with latitude. "Ob servation of the moverents sunspots has shown that one: re- volution at the equator takes place in 25 days, whereas (in solar latitude 20 dog. the period is 253⁄4 days, in latitude 30 dog. 20 days, and in latitude 40 deg. 47 days.

A satisfactory explanation of these big variations has yet to be found, but it has beện suggest- ed that owing to the fluid interior of the sun. Its rotation increases inwards towards, the centro, and that the inner layers approach nearer the equator and give that region of the sun greater velócity. than at higher latitudes, thus shortening its rotation period,
