But this year the pass has been conquered by a strange device called the snow motor, a machine that wriggles and twists across the snow-covered road at a speed of from seven to 10 miles an hour. Nothing steps it, for it pulls up the steepest grade or over the deepest drift without scarcely slackening its speed, towing behind it a sled with a. capacity of 14 passengers.
Revolving Drums.,
The machine is, founded on a sensible principle. It consists of la powerral tractor motor mounted ah two farge drums, each about six feet long and two feet and one- half in diameter. On each drum are spiral flanges two" and one- half inches high, running spiral- like from the pointed front

The first trip over the snow- covered 'pass' has been successfully made. Motor atages carried pas-. sengers to the snow line, the snow motor took them for 16 miles across the summit and at the other snow line they were met by an other stage, which transported them on to Bend.
About 16 miles of highway, cay- ered with a depth of snow varying from six inches to four feet, waa traversed with the motor. The amount of snow will increase as winter continues.

The first trip over the snow-bound McKenzie Pass revealed a country of marvellous, beauty. The Mc- Kenzie Pass is a wonderful sight im Hummer with the majestic Three Sisters peaks rising grand- ly to the south, and lesser moun- Itains, visible in the east and north, but when these great mountains are covered with gleaming snow, when the lava beds, which in sum- mer look like great heaps of huge jcinders, are glossed over with the white blanket that covers all but a few stubborn mounds, the, sight is one of the most wonderful in America
