A very interesting report of progress has recently come to hand from Mr. Galton-Fouzi, the very enterprising Secretary of the Royal East African Automobile Association. Various how routes have recently been Opened up in East Africa and on each occasion Mr. Galton-Fonzi has made the pioneer run on a British dar. Various makes have in this way boon testod und he reports that the results showod "wonderful cross-country weight-... carrying performance" and that thoy "surpassed all expec latians." Tha result of those practical tests is that the porcent-, ago of imports represented by British cars is now ten times as great as it was. in 1923. East Africa is certainly a country of motorists, since it already possesses one motor vehicle to every three-and-a-half white in. habitants.

WOMAN RACER WINS AT BROOKLANDS

Mrs. George Dullor, wife of the famous jockey, won the 5 miles race at Brooklands on an Austin by 100 yards at a speed of 72.45 miles per hour. Mrs. Christio won the 8 miles race on a Horstmann at a speed of 70:15 miles per hour. Mrs. Duller had 30 seconds deducted from her handicap as a result of winning the first race, and was benten into second lace by A. G. Gillows on a' Riley which, crossed the line a bare half length in front of Mrs. Duller. Curiously enough, almost at the same nioment that Mre. Duller was winning her raco, her husband was riding "Grenoble" to victory at Sandown Park.. The above photo shows Mrs. Duller aftor her win.

in Wild Gobi

Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews, world-famousscientist,

is now conducting his fourth expedition into the Gobi Desert in the north of Ching,

The Gobi Desert is wild, sandy, rocky and roadles” — almost impassable, at many points, even to camels to say nothing of motor cars,

On previous trips Dr. Andrews used various well known makes of cars including Dodges.. This year he is using Dodge cars exclusively-one cf the most impressive" tributes ever raid an automobile.

"It is the only car that will stand the strain," said Dr. Andrews. "Last year our Dodge cars covered 5,000 roadless miles, without repairs, and at the end of the trip we sold them for more than they cost us. Dodges are now regularly run over desert roads from Kalgan to Urga, a distance of 700 miles. Their stamina is positively remarkable.".

Simi ar units have been supplied to the King of Siam and Sultan of Johore, and also to many professional brigader in all parts of the word. Many towns find in this unit the best means of protecting the native quarters, with their nurrow and tortuous streets and passages.

A very handy light fire-fighting outfit, which can be easily car- ried by two men, is the Leyland unifit. Many examples of this are in use in Great Britain, and

others have recently been sup- plied - to Madeira, Calcutta, Christian-éund and Gibraltar.

The demonstration organised last year by the British Cycle) and Motor Cyclo Manufacturers Union served to illustrate the; fact that fire-fighting is among the practical functions of cial

ly equipped motor cycle and sidocar combinations. This typo of outfit is now in use in "con- siderable numbers, Incidentally, the demonstration in question; was so successful that the Union! has been requested to repeat the arrangement, and it is antipat- od that a demonstration of com mercial sideca s will take place in Southern England during the first week of So, tomber.

Progress in Marine Motoring.

The demand for comparatively small marino motors is increas- ing in a very satisfactory mannor in view of their utility, whether as the sole moans of propulsion of small craft or as auxiliarios on yachts and other larger vessels, Messrs. Gleniffor Motors, of Glasgow, who, have hitherto pro- duced a range of engines from 28 to 105. h.p., are now narkoting smaller sizes, including n.7/3 h.p. two-cylinder, a 14/13 h.p.

WHAT you get-not what you pay for-determines your bargain.

If a Packard Six did not give 16 miles to gallon of gasoline; 15,000 to 20,000 miles to a set of tyres; and a freedom from mechanical repairs unknown to cheaper vehicles, it could not have earned its place as one of the least expen sive cars to operate-power considered in the whole world.

But because it has established these rec ords in the hands of owners, and because its first cost is agreeably low, new thou- sands of owners are constantly expressing their surprise at its economy,
