A Limit to Dilution Effects. However, the thinning effect, due to the run-down of fuel ends, does not continue to increase inde-. finitely with service because after a certain proportion of gasoline residue accumulates in the crank case, this diluent begins to be evaporated by engine heat; the rate of this evaporation increasing with the amount of the diluent present and a time arrives when the re- sulting rate of logs of diluent equals the rate of its entrance. thus bringing about a stable con- dition of maximum dilation and

thinning.

Thinned Oll Usable if, Still Viscous Enough.

"How the Idea is Applied. Knowing the maximum percen- tage of dilution renched by the oil of any engine, the use in it of an oil sufficiently heavy, that when percentage of naphtha diluent has been added to it, it is still a safe lubricant, should result in starting, good oil distribution un- der cold conditions and longer mileage intervals between fillings.

Steering-Gear Binds. (Mr. Clough gives some of the questions he receives from time to time, together with the answers. These appear weekly and provide an instructive reference.)

Question: The steering wheel of my car turns very hard. even when the front whecke are jacked up, and has lots of lost mo- tion. When running on the road, the car pulls toward the left. What can you suggest?

Ansicer: Either there is lack of lubrication somewhere in the steering goar or else something.is adjusted too tightly. Too Late Or Too Early Spark?

Question: How can it be deter- mined whether ignition is set too late or too far ahead?

Answer: When ignition is, too late (too much retarded) an engine aels, "logy" accelerates sluggishly and will not reach a very high speed, the exhaust noise is unusual- ly loud, the water heats abnormal- ly and in extreme cases, the tim- ing-gears are very noisy and there may be occasional backfires in the earburetor. When ignition is set too early, the engine usually "clicks or knocks, especially when 'the throttle is widely opened, there is considerable loss of pulling power and usually some overheating of the circulating water."

Berlin, April 3.--More than 200 modern cave dwellers have been found living in the ash and refuse dumps on the outskirts of Berlin, amid surroundings more squalid than those of primitivo man. Poverty-strickon familios, some with as many as four children, evicted from homes for nonpay- ment of rent have survived the winter in one or two underground rooms furnished entirely from rubbish heap. City authorities have undertaken to find new abodes for the colony. There is a jobless village of more than 2,000. inhabitants living in one-room tar papor shacks on city property.
