Engineers, having long ago given up hope of creating the per- fect car, have turned their atten- tion to construction of the perfect compromise.

They have come to realize that the demand of certain autolats conflict with the requirements of others and so they have to make the best of the conflicting de mands.

Certain facts. being discovered about the cars on test have been gathered apparently with no end in view, except that they would be on record when engineers want them. Then they might form the basis for an improvement long desired in the auto world,

A list of the tests "being con- ducted on this proving ground reflects the innumerable avenues possible for the development of

the modern kuto. Here are some of the more important items being İtabulated by figures and graphs:

Acceleration, deceleration, roll- ing friction, riding qualties, fuel and maximum speed, endurance, economy at fixed speeds, minimum driver's hill-climbing, braking. vision range, reflection, headlight- ing, steering effort, vibration, noises. brake and clutch pedali pressures, crank-case dilution, ventilation, appearance.

Allowances Are Made.

The facts obtained here are merely set down. in convenient form, for the guidance of the General Motors, engineers, in plan- ning their news models.. How they are compared is suggested by: O. T. Kreusser, engineer in charge). of the proving ground.

"Here are two cars providing the same amount of leg room and senting comfort," he points out. "One car can steer in a circle of 10 per cent, less diameter than the other. Assuming everything else being equal, it can be deducted}& that the one steering the shorter has the advantage from the cus- tomer's point of view,

"Here again are two curs, the driver in one has a vision through | the windshield and past the corner posts that is 20 per cent. greater than the other.. Again the one providing the greate area of Vision has an advantage if every- thing else is equg).

"Unfortunately out of necessity the automobile must be a compro. mise involving a great many Tactors, any one of which may be of major importance to a parti- cular customer. The car mention- ed as having a shorter turning radius may be less steady to drive on'a rough road, or again the car having greater driver vision may not have a desirable rakiah appear- ance or the corner posts may be too flimsy and not provide a rug- ged door hinge hanging that is satisfactory from a durability standpoint."

Special Water Tests. How fully the search for facts even to the minutest details is being carried out is brought out nguin by Kreusser, in explaining the purpose of a special under- water concrete road which permits fooding, from barely wetting to as high as two feet.

"This special road," Kfçusser explains, "is of interest in connec- tion with determining how wet ong's feet become in many of the closed cars as we drive along a puddled road. This road also puts brakes ju shape for deceleration tests under rainy day conditions.

"Then again a standard way of determining the mud and water thrown up on the windshield and body from wheel wish is of In terast."

Thus nothing is left to the imagination. Everything is ́a fact, even to the amount of water thrown up on the Windshield] ̧.

On these facts the engineers expect to give us cars that will far outstrip the machines we are driving-to-day.
