MOVEMENT AGAINST

Rugby Feb. 23,
The House of Commons to-day passed the first reading of a pri- vate Bill introduced by Sir Henry Slesser, Solicitor-General In the late Labour Government; prohibit ing the export of works of art and ancient or historic buildings and
monuments.
In introducing the Bill, Sir Henry Slesser pointed out that per- sons of great wealth abroad had paid a compliment to Great Britain by paying great prices for her na- Bional possessions. Enumerating the types of national treasures r cently taken out of this country, he mentioned Priory House, War- wick, a beautiful old building

and which he believed was to be of had been actually re-crected in the United States. There was, he said; a constant flow of some of the meet beautiful English works of art to America. Historical records and ancient books which were an abs- lutely invaluable heritage for th derstanding the history of the coun- try were becoming the subject of ruffie by antique dealers and were being sold to the highest bidder. He agreed that this was a matter, of very great difficulty and quired grave consideration, and he thought the best advice should bel obtained from interested persons.. He suggested; therefore, that be Bill be referred to a Select Com. mittee of persons who had studied! this question in its entirety and that they should discuss exactly in what form the measure should take.

It was not anticipated that Siri Henry Slusser's Bill would be ac- cepted, but it was evident that a strong feeling prevailed against the export of our national tren- ] sures, and leave to introduce the Bill was adopted by 195 votes lo 144.-British Wireless.

BRITISH FAIR.
HOW INDUSTRY IS HELPED.
Rugby, Feb. 29.
The Prince of Wales visited the' British Industries Fair at Birming- ham this
Another afternoon. visitor was Sir Austen Chamber- lain, the Foreign Secretary.
The results. of the Fair, as re- viewed by the Exhibition manage-; ment, are most satisfactory. One exhibitor has reported the biggest order which he has ever had for wire goods, while another exhibitor n. has obtained more and better offers
for copper furnishings than at any previous Fair. Is the engineering trade, good orders have been placed] particularly for oil engines and medium-sized steel tools. In the electrical section, moderate-sized! electric plants have sold well and in the wireless section much busi- ness has been done and here Ger- mar buyers have been giving orders."
Among the Empire buyers, the first place is taken by Australia, which has given large orders for hollow ware and bruss' and steel water and steam fittings. India and South Africa have also been good customers. Much business has been done with Spain, Sean- dinavia and Denmark: One impor tant claim made on behalf of the Exhibition is that where British manufacturers have adopted mass production their products are un- equalled. A walting list of firms wishing to exhibit, but crowded oat, is so long that the authorities of the Fair have met to consider the advisability of greatly enlarging the building in preparation for a bigger success than ever next year.
