RE-DISCOVERED

COMET.

WILL 1925 BREAK THE RECORD?

In 1813 the late M. Faye; of tho Paris Observatory, discovered a comet the period of revolution. round the sun of which was found to be seven and a half yours. Faye's Comot, as it was called, [punctually made its reappearance overy seven and a half yours until the spring of 1896. Its noxt in tho appearance was duo autumn of 1903, but nothing was scon of it, which was attributed to the fact, pointed out by Dr. Strongron, that after its appear- ance in 1896 it passed close to the big planet Jupiter, the attact- ion of which considerably chang ed its previous orbit, so much indeed that its visit to the earth in 1903 took place in the summer instead of the autumn, and it slipped past unobserved because no one was then looking for it.

of

The new orbit deduced by Dr. Stromgren showed that it should turn up again at the end of 1910, and in November of that year it was rediscovered by an Italian astronomer at Toramo, thus con- firming Dr. Stromgren's theory concerning the influenco Jupiter. In 1918, when it was

due to again

visit the earth, it again oluded all search

and for it.

ominent SOTIO mathematicians re-calculated its elements in the hope of tracking it down this year. One of those why tackled the problem with. special reference to the Jupiter perturbations, was Mr. Cripps, a member of the British As- tronomical Assccation, and it is very creditable to his mathom- atical skill that Dr. Baudo, of the Hamburg Observatory, has just succeeded in rediscovering the comet almost in the exact place indicated by Mr. Cripps. Thin region of the sky through which it has been passing has been several times photographed at Hamburg this your, and since its rediscovery those plates have, been examined, and the comet has boon found on one takon as early as August 20,

This is the fifth periodic comet rediscovered this year, the others

Wolff, and Brooks bometo. In addition, four now comets have been found, one in Russia, one in S. Africa, one in Poland, and the fourth, also in Russia, nt Kharkow: but the last is some- what doubtful, as, though its dis- coverer announced it to be visible to the naked eye, no ono else has Lyet seen it.

Nine comes in one year is very exceptional. That number was discovored in 1886, and in 189 The body of an Oxford anderton mado their appearance, AR graduate, found on the railway two more periodic comets should line between Brfloot and Wok-return before December 31--the ing, has been identified as that of Tempel Swift and Schorr comets an Walter Allen Pdate, aged twenty there is every prospect that this year will set up a new comet- finding record, and if these two are rediscovered and one now comet, 1925 will end with a dozen its credit, a number never be- [fore reached in the history of
