BARLIER TELEGRAMS.

FRANCE'S TROUBLES.

Paris, November 26. In face of the depreciation of the Franc, the public is but lan- guidly interested in the Cabinet crisis and generally, doubt whether settlement of the latter will do much to nkl à solution of the former. In view of the notorious party disagreement, the more sensational newspapers even talk of plans afvol to establish a dictatorship.

WINE WEIGHING.

MERCHANTS CHARGED WITH DEFRAUDING GOVERNMENT.

Revenue Officer in the Dock.

At the Central Magistracy yea- terday afternoon, ve wine mer- charges of chants appeared on giving a false declaration in the weights of various quantities of wine and a Chinese Revenue Officer was charged with aiding and abet

M. Herriet, who fell on the financial issue in April, stated last right that his idens as regards finance are unaltered, but never- theless be is zestfully seeking the co-operation of the whole Cartel. He extracted a provisional promise of Socialist support, after which he interviewed several Cartel leaders until after midnight. Four Cartel parties in joint meeting adjourned until to-day to endeavouring the merchants to defraud the to draft an agreed financial scheme.

M. Auriol, Socialist Chairman of the Finance Commission, is mentioned as probable Finance Minister.

It is known that M. Herriot hopes to retain M. Briand as Minister of Foreign Affairs.--Reuter.

Paris, November 26.

The Cabinet crisis is perhaps the most difficult in the history of the Third Republic. The altitude of the Socialists remains a stum- bling block And a split in their ranks is now threatened on the question of joining the Cabinet.

Government. -

Mr. J. D, Lloyd prosecuted and, Mr. M. W. Le represented the Revenue Officer, while Mr. A. E. Hall appeared for the remaining five defendants.

M. J. A. Fraser, assistant | Superintendent of Imports and Ex- ports, continued his evidence and prodated lists of figures showing] the amount of wine declared 'by the shops of the respective defendants,

CONVICTION OF COMMUNISTS,

London, November 26.

The imprisonment of virtually the whole Communist executive will conceivably not be the end of the party's discomfiture, since justlication for further proceedings may be regarded as embodied in the significant phrase of the judge sentencing the defendants: "Yo are members of an illegal party carrying on an illegal work."

The convictions are the topic of all the newspapers. Many appinud the prosceutions as providing a healthy warning, and none question the legal justice of the convictions, though some opposition' commentators doubt the wisdom of driving subversive activities under- ground.

Labour members have lodged a motion in the House of Commons, protesting against the prosecution as an violation of the right of free speech and publication of opinion. The motion is signed, inter alius, by Mr. Ramsey Macdonald and Mr. J. H. Thomas and comes up on December 1st.-Reuter.

During the course of Mr. Fraser's evidence, Mr. Lloyd stated that declaration figures of over 40 Armaj altered from those obtained by the Reverive Officer.

Answering a question asked by Mr. Hall regarding a number of| invoices which he had received from] his clients, witness said that in his opinion they were not genuine.

Mr. Hall submitted that his clients were only able to fill in the form issued by the Imports and Exports Department regarding the weights of their consignments from the invoices they received, and should those invoices be incorrect it was not the fault of the de- fendants. The papers agreed with the declaration form and the de-1 fendants could not give the weights) of the jars except from the invoices. The case was adjourned till Wednesday next.
