particular diametor to represent. Thus a dot of the smallest diamater signified that that particular spot was light, and the largest sized dot that the portion was yery dark. By call- ing the dots a, b, c, d, and o, and using a very high magnification of the picture, it was possible to transmit very good imprès- sions of the original. The time taken, however, in piecing out the picture at the transmitting. station and the assembling of it rendered the method impractic- acle as a commercial proposition. An entirely new outlook on the whole problem was introduced when it was discovered that solonium was very sensitivo, to light. In France the polios were. employing a system involving the use of the solonium coll when detaining criminals, for they were able to send over the ordia- ary telegraph lines impressions of the wanted man's finger prints.

The puppet show is a forerun- nor of the modern Italian marion- ettes, which were brought to London for a season last year.
