SNAKE-KILLER AT WEMBLEY.Į

`TO-DAY'S FASHION,

The Mongoose's Immanity.

It was at Wembley, where tho Indian anako-charmers exhibit their curious pots, that the quos tion was only debated'; and the point at issue was whether the Mongoose, which specialises in killing snakos, was immune to snako polson or not,

Whilst listening. interestedly to the controversy my thoughts travelled back to old mau Mungla, a Prince of Snake

oharmera, who taught me more about enskes in a month than 1 would have learnt in a year on my own.

His nomenclature was not t mployed by the scientists, but ho was none the worss off for that. He wis, indoed, an artist:

Our first meeting was rathor dramatic, My Indian cook object- od on principle to snakes in bie kitchen,, One pooped at him at intervals from a hole in the wall, and ho implored me to have its presence removed.

Mungla was mentioned as a likely candidate for the job, 80 that his services were duly requisitioned on the distinct understanding that he would earn a reward of one, rupee for evory snake captured. · ·

Then the snake catching bogan in earnost, His power over tho reptiles was nothing short of uncanny. He caught a snake a day for a whole week until I thought it advisable to discon- tinue the reward; after which the snakes doserted the kitchen, the cook regained possession, and conditions became quito normal again.

PROFOUND KNOWLEDGE. The old man's knowledge of anakes, however, was profound. He would tell the uninitiated of tho Mongoose's immunity from snake bite on account of the little animal's knowledge of a secret herb, which no human being had ever discovered.

Those were lightly but strongly built, bounded on their, hindloga liko kangaroos, caught and rent their prey with clawod "... foro-limbs, and bit them with wide-gaping jaws armod with › sabra-shaped, saw-adged tooth. The huge skull of Tyrannosaurus with its cruel array of teeth, is certainly enough to make one shudder, and even tho Oxford Mogalosaurus would have boon an ugly customer..

But at thoir worst those dinosaurs would not have boon more dangerous than liona and tigers, and I suspect that man would have found thom loss terrible. The reason for my opinion is the exceeding emall brain with which the dinosaurs were provided. A crocodila of to-day has far less intelligence and a loss developed brain, than a modern mammal; but the brain of a dinosaur was relatively about one-tenth the size of that of a crocodile. One of the causes why all the dinosaurs became x- timot was no doubt the rise of tho more intolligent class of mammal.

Even those earlier mammals than later mammals of the same had brains very much smaller

bodily bulk. Man who, for all bis faults, is the most brainy.of all mammals, would have had, no difficulty in fooling even a Tyrannosaurus:
