TWO TYPES.
The automatic train control device adopted by the Rock Island is only one of two distinct typoa: the Intermittent and the continuous systoms.
The intermittent system is one by which a sories either of camps or of magnetic contacts are plac ed at régular intervals along the track to control the brake mechanism of passing locomo tives. Thus, trains are subject to automatic control at i- termittent intervals.
Under the continuous contact system, an electric curront passes through the entire track, so that the train may be placed under immediate control no mattor evhers it happens to be.
By the continuous control sys- | tom, when a train, enters a block: it de-energizes the track behind for one block and controls the relay system of electric control on blocks farthor bohing, so that trains following can be kept down to certain specified spoeds.
There is a similar speed control system for the intermittont type. It is the de-energizing of the track, ramp or magnet that causes the brakes to work autom atically. While curront passos through these devices, the eng- inoer gets a signal in his cab that the road is clear.
