THE BOOKSHELF.

CHINA OF YESTERDAY "AND TO-DAY.

We were once asked by a ́Išcturer to recommend a book on

Chins, which, whilst not exceede ingly bulky, or packed with mere fannals and statistics, would give a comprehensive story of the country, its history, people, and institutions work from which the average reader could learn all સલ ·we ild be likely to want to know about this ancient land, its old civilisation, its great men of the past, and its marvellous social system. We regretfully replied that, so far as We knew, no such book existed.! That, however, was before the Ipublication of “China: Yesterday (and To-Day", which reachés

us from the Thomas Y. Growell' Company, of West Broadway, New York. This volume of about 600 pages is written by an authority on his subject. Pro- fessbr E T. Williams of the University of California, who was one time Americao Charge d' Afsites at Peking. and spent Imany years in China: and his work, embodies all the require- ments above enumerated.

There is a peculiar fascination about this book which can only be explained by the able way in which it is written and the con- Itents arranged informative yeti interesting throughout. Com- mencing with a geographical des. cription of China, the following chapter takes us back about 5,000 years to the 'early dawn of the ¡civilisation of Cathay.

Then comes a description of the family, that great social institution of the! Chinese; next the marriage cero-i Imonies and status of women: I then a study of that hard-working: individual who forms the back- bone of the country the farmer: jand.there follow chapters dealing] with village and city life, crafts-1 manship, guilds, the calendar and its festivals. Confucius and his teaching and its results. other religions. early foreign inter- course and the effects, the com- mencement and building up of the "open door." reforms. the setting up of the Republic. and the modern problems of the coun- try. A list of important dates in} Chinese history. a bibliography. and statistical appendix help to make it a valuable book of refer- ence. There are, besides, a large number of,, illustrations. and a good map of China and Japan is! enclosed in a pocket in the cover. The book is well bound and well printed..

In conclusion, we cannot re- frain from quoting: "A. . . . *.Į tendency to abandon old customs for new is seen in all the relations and activities of life in China. ...] The picturesque is being 03- changed for the commonplace and ugly.

There ought to be a society for the preservation of nativo cultures to offset this drift toward a deadly sameness.” That. we think, will find endorse- ment by the large majority of Western observers.

J. D. BERESFORD'S SHORT STORIES.

Mr. J. D Beresford is well- known as a writer of novels and short stories. and the reading-public will welcome "The Imperturbable Duchess and Other Stories." which deasTS, W Collins, Sons & Co. issue in their Colonial Edition. This is the firs: collection of magazine stories which Mr. Beresford has published, and a few of them have not been in print before.

explains bow to capture the favour of editors and publishers, particularly in America. It is aa account of Mr. Baresford's experiences. and possibly his advice will prove profitable to a large number of budding authors. Of the stories themselves, some are better than others, but all are readable. They show a wide rango, and prove the author's great versatility.
