Loadin, Dec. §.
The state of parties at the conclusion of the second day'a polling
is as follows:
Conservatives Liberals Labourites
Independents
.239 seats.
14S seats.
IST seats.
S seats.
Shetheld remains unchanged except for a Conservative gain from the Liberals. At Newcastle the Liberals crptured the two Labour seats. Mr. Acland, Liberal, was re-elected at Tiverton by a majority of three out of a poll of twenty-four thousand. The West Riding of Yorkshire resulted in the return of foar Conservatives, five Liberals and ten Labour, as compared with 5. 3 and 11 before the election. The erection at Fermanagh resulted in the re-election of the National- ist. Mr. Harbison and Mr. Healy, the Sina Feiner, by majorities of six thousand over the two Conservatives. Mr. Healy is at prestal 14-
Amid the perplexity of trying to pierce the veil of the obscure future and forest who is to carry on the King's Government, it is Roteworthy that Mr. Ba.dwin bas little sympathy among the news- paper commentators. Liberal opinion may be crystallised in the words, "Serve you right." while the Conservatives are inclined to dwell on the folly of sacrificing a safe position against the advice of many Conservative leaders. All anxiously discuss the possibility" al finding the greatest commɔn measure of agreement between parties to carry on as long as possible and by that means anoid andther election in the near future, which anyhow would probably merely produce the present situation. A Coalition is also unpopular, there fore most suggestions run on the lines of a single party forming the Government with the promise of another party's support on more or less contentious legislation. But which party will continue office is at present the subject of mach disagreement. The Conservatives are content to regard protection as set back for many years, while the Liberal's proclaim it as definitely killed.
An analysis of the votes cast hitherto shows the following:
Conservatives Labour Liberal
5,417,094.
4,477,617. .4.254,556.
Mr. Ramsay Mardonald was ovated byn crowd on arrival at Pad- dington, there being cries of "The future Premier." Intervened, he said he was mut surprised with the results of the election, only the attitude of the newspapers made him uncertain as Labour had latterie not been supported except by its owa puper. The feeling of the workers towards the press was most bitter, and he seriously asked newspapers to reconsider their attitude. He added that the party might have dropped the capital lewy, but it was not seeking to snatch seats it was build. ing on sare foundations to be ready when the time comes. Our task for the present is to educate opinion, and the results indicate that we are succeeding.
While the question of the general policy of the Labour Party in view of the new political stackion will be referred to a joint meeting with the General founell of the Trades Union Congress on Wed- mesday, a labour sticlal this mording denied that there was the Flightest possibility of a coalition on working agreement with the Liberals. He said that Labour would be quite content to ertinue as the official Opposition with the added weight and strength which the election had gives.
The results of the elections have admittedly shocked Conserva- tive supporters, causing acute anxiety to Ministers. Callers on Mr. Baldwin at Downing Street this morning included the King's Private Secretary. Lord Stamfordham, Lord Cave. Sir Phillip Lloyd-Greame, whereafter 1r. Baldwin went to Chequers for the week-end. It is learned that he takes the situation calmly and will do nothing unti! the Cabinet meeting. It is expected in some quarters that he will resign the leadership of the party. In which event a party meeting would be summoned eary next week to appoint a successor. The names of Lord Derby and Mr. Austin Chamberlain have already bean mentioned.
Rome, Dez. 8.
The fiorni d'italia states that European Governments are some- what worried over the results of the British elections as they foresee the reappearance of Mr. Lltyd George, though it is difficult to see how he ran ally himself with Labour.
New York, Dec. 8.
The newspapers opine that Mr. Baldwin made a had mistake in appealing to the country. The Tia says that pot since Disraeli in 1830 has there been such a gross miscalculation of British publiz opinion or was defect as crushing and as unexpected The Tribune observes that the Labour gains point to the permanence of this new group and suggests that the two bourgeois parties will ultimately coalesce. The World says that the Tory party has received a beating which is thoroughly deserved. Its foreign policy has been a failure. its domestic policy a muddle, and it has brought nothing but confu wion into politics-American Secrire.
Paris. Dec. 8.
Some anxiety is evinced by the press as to the ultimate effect of the British electoral results on Franco-British re.ations. Though it is granimously opining that the Government has been defeated on the Protection issue alone, it is widely felt that there will be another general election before long. The consensus is that Britain is face. with a difficult period, which a number of papers fear may be pre- judicial to the Entente.
Berlin, Des. 3.
The newspapers generally welcome the defeat of the Baldwi Government owing to its alleged vacillating attitude in European problems. Several iglerpret the results as a victory for the opponents of M. Poincare's polity, but warn readers against too great hopes.

1924 BUICKS
Canton.
For the sixth consecutive year Buick has been assigned first place at the National Automobile Shows which will be held in the United States during January 1924.
As has been the case in previous years, the choice of positions was made on the basis of the greatest dollar volume of business done by manufacturers during the year at hand. The fact that Buick has been given first place six times in succession is convincing evidence of Buick's leadership, and the leadership of General Motors, in the automotive world.
Buick is now producing, over 1000 cars a day-the greatest production in its history.
