*PRESIDENT MADISON * having arrived from Seattle Ivia ports, on Nov. 7th. Consignees are hereby notified that their cargo is being landed at their risk into the hazardous and/or extra hazardous godowns of the Hongkong and Kowloon Wharf. and Godown Co., at Kowloon, & stored at consignees' riak.

Consignees of Cargo must pro- duce in Import Permit signed by the Superintendent of Imports & Exports. Hongkong, before Bills of Lading will be countersigned.

All broken, chafed and damag- ed cargo is to be left in the go- downs, where it will be examined at 10 am. on 13th Nov., at the Company's Surveyors, Messrs. Anderson and Ashe.

All claims must be presented within thirty days of the arrival hare, after steamer's which they cannot be recognised No claims will be recognised after the goods have left the go- downs, and cargo undelivered on and after November, 14th. will be subject to rent.

WAIF WHO SAVED.

317 LIVES

Shipwreck Hero of the China Seas.

One of the "old boys" of the Church of England Waifs and Strays Society in London has been thanked and decorated by the Chinese Government for his part in saving the lives of 317 native soldiers.

The society, for obvious rea- sons, does not wish to disclose the identity of this gallant "old boy," who left the institution during the war and joined the Navy.

When he left, the Service, at the close of the war, he secured a position with the Chinese Cas- toms, and it was while sarving at- sea that he wonsthe honour now bestowed on him. He is a native of Cambridge, and is 27 years of agt.

It is possible-though this can- not be confirmed that the in- eident in which the decoration was won had some connection with the wreck of the steaner Hong Mob. of Singapore, with about 1,100 Chinese passengers, in. October 192L

At the time it was reported that when H.M.S. Carlisle arrived on the scene there'were 350 persons aboard, and rescue work was carried on all day,—Ex.
