Commencing with the arrival from Vancouver of the "Empress of Eussia" 25th March, the Caord.an Pacific will inaugurate a New Service between Hongkong and Manila by the Steamers "Empress of Russia” and "Empress of Asia.”
Leaving Hongkong regularly on the Wednesday after arrival from Vancouver the Steamere will arrive at Manila, Friday Morning, leave Manila Saturday Evening and arrive back in Hongkong, Monday Morning 7 a.m.

Chan Chik-sam, a police datre- tive, was charged before Mr. C.D. Malbourne sathe Magistracy Fes- turday afternoon with demanding money with menaces, with in- timidation and with ciolating his Juss.

The substance of the evidenon was that at Des Voeux Road Central on the night of October 23rd. the accused socoated the complainant Ip Wah-teum, an elder brother et General Ip Kus, Chief Lieutenant to. Chan "Kwing ming before the latter was ousted from. Canton by Sun Yat-zon's adher- ents. His relationship with Gian- eral Ip having bean confirmed,' the complainant was taken by the defendant ostensibly to the Police Station, On the way the defandast confided to the complainant that tis political rivals wanted to. get him into trouble. If the com plainant would give him $500, however, he not only would nai help the political intriguers in their work as he bad been asked to do. but would also accord him (the complainant) protection. The com plainant then took the detective to
friend's house where the sum of mones to be paid was discussed a; length. Eventually, through the good uffices of the complainant's fread. the matter was settled at 375, the greater portion of the money being raised by the com- plainant by a loma from a fallow lodger of his. Next morning the complainant reported the matter to Chief Detective Inspector Grat, ; and as a result of investigations the
defendant was charged.
