One of the objects I had in view in raising funds for the preservation and restoration of H.M.S.Victory was to bring be fore the whole Empire, and par- ticularly the rising generation. the history and value of this grand o'd ship to the nation.

During the first twenty days of this month (August) no fewer than fifteen thousand people hava visited the ship, now proudly resting, after 150 year's service. in the historical No. 2 Dock

Portsmouth. Among the visitors to the ship was one man whose great-grandfather served in the ship at Trafalgar. He had journeyed far to see the ship, and on reaching the quarter-deck and beholding for the first time the place where Nelson fell, he drop- ped upon his knees and in loud. impassioned tones gave expres sion to prayer and thanksgiving that his pilgrimage had ended happily and that these sacred planks endured for the admiration of those who honoured the names of England and Nelson. Quita s considerable crowd was on the upper deck, and gathering round in a solemn hush they ben; their heads and listened to him, while all the men

present removed their hats. This is a vary great tribute; and it is Tery pleasing to my committee that the work of restoring and pre- serving the ship has met with such general approval

The fund is performing a great service, and I am satised that the necessary money to complete the task I have undertaken wili be forthcoming as the need be. comes more widely known. i will be much relieved if some patriotic friends would contribute to enable us to push the work now proceeding to B speedy conclusion. All donations, the small as well as the large, will be equally welcome:

THE NEW ERA. Willersley Castle. Matlock, is to be let, and part of the sur- rounding estate is to be offered for sale... This was the statemen: made to the tenantry by Captain Richard Arkwright, who has re- cently come into the estate. Ha said he could not afford to live at the castle, at any rate for some years. A quarter of the value of the property would have to be paid in death duties and this would leave him with only about half the income of his late father.

PEARLS MISTAKEN FOR BEADS.

Picking up what he thought was simply a string of beads worth a penny or two in the roadway in Charlotte square: Edinburgh, John Logan, a care- taker, put them in his pocket. He forgot all about his find antil he read that a reward of £140 was being offered for the recovery of a doublestring pearl necklace. He took them to the police station, where the woman who lost them recognised her paris. They are" worth £1,400.
