The lowest birth-rate in any Isecond quarter-except during the war period --was recorded by the Registrar-General of: Britain. [during April, May and June this [year.

This is perhaps the cutstanding feature of the return for the quarter, issued recently,

Births registered in the second quarter numbered 196.831, and were 3,861, more than in the pre- ceding quarter, but 3719 fewer: than in the corresponding quarter Lot 1922.

This corresponds to an annual rate of 20.7 per 1,000 of the ești- [mated population.

Of these 196.831 births, 100 283

i were boys and 96,548 girls, giving

a proportion of 1,039 males to 11.000 females: the average pr

portion in the ten preceding second quarters was 1,045,

Death registered numbered 114,040, and were 10.680 fewer than in the preceding quarter, and 6215 fewer than in the corresponding quarter of 1922.

They included 58,242 males and 55798 females, corresponding to an annual rate of 12.0 per 1,000 estimated population and a proportion of 1.044 males to 1,000 females.

The death rate for infants under Jone year was equal to 66 per 1,000 Įthis being the lowest rate record-

in any second quarter.

-The number of persons married in the first quarter of 1923 in England and Wales was 105,562, a decrease of 46,198 from the num- ber in the preceding quarter, and an increase of 5,414 over that in the corresponding quarter of 1922.

LADY HAMILTON FINED.

Lady (Diana) Hamilton, who was arrested after a motor smash in Regent-street on the night of July 25, again appeared at Mari- borough-street Police Court last month charged with drunkenness.

She now gave her age as 35, and described herself as Agatha Margaret Blanche Harailton, the wife of Edward Archibald Ham-

tea, baronet.

The magistrate (Mr. Mead) im- posed a fine of 10s, with £4 4s. costs. Notice of appeal was given. Dr. William Dunn, po.ice divi įsional surgeon, said be examined Lady Hamilton very carefully. She was drunk, and unable to look after herself. Askod her name, she said she had none, and gave her age as "A bundred.” She could not walk without help. Mr. Harry Myers (defending): If you bad known that Lady Hamilton was I bysterical neuroric woman who had been in a nursing home for three months. this year, would that have affect-. ed your opinion? -Not as to her condition, but as to the amount of alcohol needed to put her in that condition.

Police sergeant Mackenew said after her arrest, Hamilton gave the name of a friend in Baker- street, but the friend declined to go to the police station.
