FRENCH A GERMAN DIALECT.

Berlin Literary Sensation. Berlin Publishers. are chary of bringing out anything more risky than a new odition of an old favourite, classic, ori pseudo-classic, that a literary sonestion has become a rarity in Germany. The success of an im- posing volume issued a few weeks ago is a purely negative one,

Tho

French Language--a German Dialect," is being rend by all the loading men of lottore and quoted at length in most reviews. It would, say the most acute of German philogists, be an exquisitely humorous work if it was not intended to be taken seriously. A few examples will serve to show the lengths of which aggravated Nationalism

can go,

Herr Erost Fuhrmann, the author, is known in literary- airales. But he has surprised even his friends by the ingenious methods by which he proves that not merely the French language, but the Latin, from which the great part of its roots are derived. spring from German scurces. Even the greater part of the Greek tongue has the saine Germanic origin! Herr Fuhrmann arrives at many surprising conclusions by. an exchange of labials. "Femme," for instance, according to this argument, is not derived in any way from Femina," but comes straight from the Teutonic "Memm," "Mama." ** Mettre "" and "Mittere "have nothing to do with one another; the root is "Mit-far"-to place in the midst.

German professors are writing long articles to disprove the argu- ments of Herr Fuhrmann, whose habit, not only of interchanging consonants at will, but of invert- ing their order in the word" dis- concerte even his admirere. Neither the truths of history mor the developments of society pre- sent the slightest obstacles for

and more entertaining reading can scarcely be imagined.

Protect Plants, Birds and Historic Places.

Tokyo, June 30.-In an effort to protect rare plants, birds, and various places of historic interest in the mountains of Japan, the Department of Home Affairs has decided to instruct the authorities of prefectural governments to in- spect the belongings of mountain climbers when they come down from the mountaine. The deci- sion of the authorities of the department is due to the fact that mountain climbing during the eummer months has become very popular.in Japan, as the result of which material valuable in scien- tific researob in the mountaina has been rapidly disappearing.

It is believed that rare plante, birds and relics have been molest. ed or stolen by mountain climbers. It is reported that 40,000 persons climbed the Japanese Alps last
