Thousands of slaves are ap-- parently being marketed in Abyssinia The French Gavern- ment has discovered that month. ly shipments of slaves are pass- ing through the port of Tadjonrah. in Somaliland, from which traffic the local Sultan derives a fee of a dollar per head on each slave shipped to Arabia.

British naval units have recent- I been shelling villages on the doask of Oman (Arabia) in con- nection with slave-running oper- ations, and a convoy of slaves recently discovered by them pro- ceeding from French Somaliland was believed to have come from | Abyssinia,"

In the case of the slave traffic on the Oman coast, it is under- stood that the slaves bad been obtained from Persia and Baluchistan.

Terrible stories of conditions in Abyssinia are told by Mr. John Harris in his pamphlet, just Issued, on "Slavery and the Obligations of the League of Nationa."

Evidence on the subject comes from official documents concern- ing slaves and from travellers who have lately bean in Abys- sini. Among the worst horrors is the sale of young girls who are suctioned to the highest bidder..

Purified Acetylene And Oxygen.

A new general anaesthetic has been discovered by Profesor K. Gause, of Freiburg, and it bas been named Narcylene.

"It consists of two gases, purifi- ad acetylene and oxygen, Dr, C. H. S. Herwitz informs the Lancet and the objectionable smell of the acetylene is largely missed by the addition of oil of pine.**

Acting upon a suggestion of Professor W. Straub, that the sni aesthetic properties of acetylene gs might prove of use in general surgery, Gausa decided to experî- ment with it,
