AN ELOPING COUPLE.

Girl Takes The Blame.

Before Mr. J. E. Wood at the Magistracy yesterday afternoon, | Lai Nina sze, a respectable looking man, was charged on remand with taking away an unmarried girl under the age of 21 from the law- tul custody and control of her guardian.

Mr. A. E. Wood, an assistant in the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs, prosecuted. Mr. E. Davidson re- presented the defendant.

According to the evidence, the guardian in the case is the girl's uncle, the master of a marine delicacies shop, 27 Wing Lok Street West. The uncla left the Colony for Shanghai on December

th., leaving his niece in the care of an amak, to whom he had given instructions to keep the girl in- doors, as it is not becoming, 80- cording to Chinese custom, to allow young girls to go out umat- tended. The girl was engaged to be married.

The evidence of the girl was to the effect that the accused lived next door to her, and she had often visited his house- Her uncle was not acquainted with the defendant, but she had known him for about a month. Intending to elope with the defendant, she left home alone at 9.30 on the morning of Decem- ber 28th.. taking with her a small handbag, and a little jewellery be longing to herself. She sent for the defendant by telephone from the Woo Shing matting shop in Des Voeux Road West. and when he arrived at 11 am told him thas She had run away of her own accord from home, and suggested

The defendant urged her to return home sad at first negatived the proposal to go to Canlon, point- ing out the possibility that she might be traced by her cle; but eventually ho complied with [the request, because she threstam. ed to make ber life by jumping into the barbour. Defendant book- ed two single second class railway tickets for Canton and took her across to Kowloon. Just after she bad landed on the other side, said the girl, be was stopped by ber uncle's ricksha puller.

The Law on the Matter:

When asked by the Magistrate how she disposed of the railway ticket, the girl said she tore it up in view of the failure of her at tempt to rim away.

In reply to Mr. Wood as to what she was to do after reaching Can- ton, the girl stated that she would live there with the accused, but later corrected herself and said the defendant would then retura to Hongkong. After a brief stay at Canton she would proceed to her | village.

At the conclusion of the evidence Mr. Davidson quoted several cazes in order to show that if a girl leaves ber parents without any persuasion, inducement or bandishment held out by the defendant, though it is hi moral duty to return the girl, yet his cot doing so is not an in- fringement of the law.
