"AFFAIRS IN THE NEAR EAST.

*Constantinople, Nov. 4. The Grand Vizier has informed the High Commissioners of the Powers that the Constantinople Government has decided not to send a delegation, to the Lausanne Conference,

The decision of Angora relative to the Sultanate has caused consternation among all sober-minded Turks as bang a Now to the deepest-rooted traditions of the nation. The action is believed to be liable to damage the prestige of the Caliphate in the eyes of the entire Moslem world. It is falt that the extremists at Angora have carried the day, and the Turks are asking themselves where these ruthless innovations will end.

The order for the expulsion of all Christians is also cansing sarious misgivings, as they are not only traders but also artisans, and practically all skilled labour is supplied by the Greeks and 5 Armeniars.

Speculation is rife here regarding the results of the impending elections. It is generally agreed that the present unwieldy Re-. publican majority in Congress will be materially reduced; likewise that the reduced Repablican majority will include elements dangerously subversive to party dscipline, the tendency boing to replace ultra-Conservatives by Liberals and Radicals.
