Both outputs and tonnage have responded to the demand. The production in the South Wales coalfield has been restored to practically the pre- war level of about 1,100,000 tons per week, while so great has been the supply of shipping that the docks have been unable to accom- medate it. In the circumstances the Great Western Railway |Company, which is now in com- plete control of the South Wales docks, has been completed to adopt stringent regulations to prevent chaos and-inefficiency in the shipment of coal. Vessels are not allowed to eater the docks except in cases where tips have been allocated to them, and collieries have been prevented from forwarding coals beyond the jaactions unless they have tonnage in berth ready to ship the coal. These regulations have been justified by the results. The output", of the cori tipping appliances has exceeded those for any other period since the war, and tem- porarily the United States bas become the chief destination for the export of South Wales coals. The weekly shipments to that' country have already reached from 110,000 to 150,000 tons, and at these figures America is absorbing approximately 30 per cent of the foreign trade of the. Bristol Channel ports.
