NEW SILK FACTORY FOR CHELIANG.

The Ching Yuen Silk Weaving Factory of Slaceban, Chakiong, bas petitioned the Ministry of Agriculture, and Commerce for registration.

THE BRITISH EMPIRE EXHIBITION, Dǝwan Bahadur T. V. Achariyar has been appointed Indian Commissiener for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924. It was he who organized the Madras exhibitions of 1915 and 1917. He has served in the lo

of the dustries Department Government of India; and was recently successful as Dowan (Minister) of Cochin State, where he stimp.sted the development of industries.*

The Legislative Assembly has already expressed its strong sup port for the exhibition, and replies from local Governments and States regarding participa- ition are now awaited........

RUBBER ROADS.

The Public Works Department in Ceylan used heavy blocks of scrap rubber to pave a bridge in the Chilaw District. The Director of Public Works reports that the rubber blocks have stood heat and wear and tear vary well. The Ceylon Public Works Depart- ment intends to make further road-paving experiments with rubber blocks at Colombo shortly. The Colombo Chamber of Cam- merce is now making arrange- ments to present some scrap rub- ber to the Sydney City Council, Now South Wales, Australia, for paving the road and pavements in front of the Sydney Hospital. At the present price of inferior scrap tie cost of rubber block-paving of rade will continus to be between: £1 and £5 per square yard, and any general use of this method of paving cannot be expected. It is reported that an estate road treated two-and-a-half years ago with a secret solution of rubber very like tar shows no signs of of wear so far. Mesars, Gordon Fraser and Co, estate agents, of Colombo, have presented to the Colombo municipality five barrels of the solution to be tasted on the. Colombo roads. The experiments have just been begun. The rab- ber solution is at first beated and brushed on the thorouzbly dry sorface of a road like tar. Next. na river sand and gravel are sprinkled over, and a steam or motor roller is run over it. Three after these operations hours the road is again fit for use. Upon the conditions detailed, if tha solution soaks in 116th of am inch, it is expected to prove bet- ter than asphalt, which laid on same Colombo roads eight months ago, at a cost of 33 cents to 40 cents a square yard, now shows signs of weir beneath the surface. It now costs between 10 cents and 15 coats a yard to tar Color- bo roads. The new rubber sola. tion will cost about 20 conly.
