The Liverpool Journal of Com merce states: The Chinese are intarested in the efforts of the | Germane to regain the teade they

once had in the Far East. Roe? cently an agreement was signed between the Chinese San pal Steam Navigation Company and the Hamburg-Amerita Lins con ¡cerning the transshipment of cargoes arriving from Germány to the Yangtze ports as far as Chungking in Szechuan provides and Changshain Hunan province. It is expected that the signing of [this agreement will lead to similar [co-operative enterprises, as the

Chinese who were formerly con- nected with the Germans in, business are very anxious to resume relations. Developments are bound to affect Japan's trade. China's neighbour having ac quired the greater portion of the trade on the Yangtze that was formerly in the hands of the Germans. The Hamburg. Amerika Ling did an extansive business in the Far East before the War. So complete was its organisation in pre-war days that it had extended isa Europa to China sarvice by the provision of its own steamers on the Yangtze River. To-day, of coarse, its flug is conspicuous by its absence in Far Eastero waters. The Japanses have taken advantage of the loss of the German mercantile marine, The traders of Hamburg, Bremen, and other places, baodicapped by the lack of German shipe, have prned to the Japanese liners in their sagernues to re-enter the hing field. Hamborg has been made a port of call in N.Y.K. and 0.9.E. services and the Japanese are rapidly acquiring a large share of the German carrying trade. Now it seems the Germans [intend to try to regain it and so re-establish the close relation with the Chiness that was feature of Far Eastern commerce a year or two before the war.
