SHIP-TO-SHORE WIRELESS FEAT. A remarkable achievement in ship-to-shore wireless working is reported by the White Star liner Baltic. KIANOSU'S KEW CANAL

The Chinese Ministries of Fin- ance and Interior are reported to bare submitted a petition to the. President asking that the Super- intendent of the New Cans in Kiangsu be permitted to float z loan of $1,800,000 for digging the canal. It is stated that the former plans and work are in such wretched conditions & to render their use impracticable. This loan is to be redeemed at the end of 25 years and will have as security the transporta tion lar of the new canal. The government is asked to supply $600,000 to be paid over a period of five years. The two ministers are reported ready to furnish $300,000 which was formerly agreed upon in order to give en- couragement to the project,

In the House of Commons, Mr. Mills asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he would state the number of Chinese, Asis- tica and Africans sailing in British | ships during the years 1920 and \='|1921. and the number of Chinese, Asiatics and Africans who were sailing in British ships trading to the United Kingdom, and who bad been signed on abroad, giving each item separately. Bir William Mitchell Thomson.--The numbers of Lascars and of foreigners other than Lescars employed in 1920 on weasels belonging to the United Kingdom were 50,273 and 15,440 respectively. Under the description "Lascara” are included Asiatica and East Afri- cans, whether British subjects.or foreigners, employed on vessels trading between India and this country, or entirely in Asiatic or Australian waters, and serving under agreements. which ter- minste in Asia.
