Advices from Indo-China state thas plans are under-discussion for the construction of a railway fram Mekong to the sea.

This railway would bring Mekong within twenty-four hours' dis- tance of Haiphong.

AUSTRALIAN TRADE CONDITIONS. Sir James Connolly, the AustTK- lian Commoner in London, reply- ing to Baron Lamington's letter" in the newspapers, expresses astonishment at the sweeping statements, during the course of which he alleged that Australian Government control - and inter- ference with private enterprises had produced stagnation. He is stanced railway extension, not- ably in Queeneland. Sir James Connolly states that the Govern- ment railways are no: State busi- ness enterprises, but a means of promoting settlament and the development of resources. Speak- ing officially on behalf of West Australia. Sir James challenges Baron Lamington to produce a single instance to support his al legation that private enterprises have been robbed of the fruits of their labour by legislation.
