COMMERCIALI NEWS,

PETROLEUM COMRIKES,

The proposed amalgamation of Taikoku Petroleum Co. and the Asahi Patroleum. Co, for which Messrs. Oku and Sejima, repres- enting the respective companies have been negotiating is reported to have come to a deadlock. The Taikaka Company has found some gushers in Akita Prefecture and in about to increase its capital," while also importing and refining foreign crude oil. In the mean- time, Mr. Hori of Niigata-kad bas founded, with a capital of Y50,000, an all company under the name of the Hoden Petroleum Co.-the “same name as that of the com- pany absorbed by the Nippon Petroleum Co. some months ago. Recantly. Afr. Watanabe Tokichi, which was formerly a Director and Auditor of the absorbed Hodan Petroleum Co. has been projecting the purchase of that newly-established company. Fel- low-producers Bre in doubt whether his plan will prove fruit- Jul, however,

BRITISH METHODS IN EXPORT TRADE.

It is always a matter for satis- faction when we find British methods commended by America. The particular instance we bave now in misd concerns the high opinion entertained in the States of British methods in the export coal trade. Americs admits that partly because of her own mis. takes, and partly through better British practice, she is losing many of those foreign markets she recently secured for her coal ex- ports. The adoption of British methods is urged. British coals are sold on a colliery certificate basis, and their quality is well known to foreign buyers who are | able to place complate confidance in the supplies received. Such confidence has not been justified as regards supplies received from America. where irresponsible dealers have made abundant promises which have not been lived up to. Reliability has been one of the main causes in Great Britain's success in this par ticular trade, and if for "coal' we substitute the names of 'other commodities the success of Great Britain in other branches of foreign commerce becomes Lequally spaareal. There can be no better foundation for trade overseas. Moreover, it is admit- ced that export business in Great Britain is handled by men who have been treined to it all their lives, and their fathers before them. In competition for foreign trade other ostions, compared with Great Britain, are

very much in the position of amateurs in a trial of strength with profes- sionals. Experience, however, will quickly equalise matters. Ia the meantime it is indeed satis- factor to note that our petitors admit that Great Britain's success is due to experience and to the maintenance of & standard of quality that our methods stimulate praise rather than cən- sure, and that other great nations reg-rd them as examples to be studied and adopted by their own con-mercial and industrial in- terests.
