COMMERCIAL NEWS.
IMPORTANT ENGINEERING OPENINGS IN AUSTRALIA. In an address before mambar of the Victorian Institute a Emgineers at Melbourne, the President, Mr. H E Grave, dealt with the functions and status of the institute in ralation. to the great engineering problems of the nation in order to show that the engineering profession should be prepared for great in- dustrial expansion. Australia wasin & more fortunate position than the rest of the world. No where was the future brighter, the prospects greater and advance- ment more assared than la Australia, and the advancements and achieverüents must, in the largest part, depend on the work of Australian engineers.
-AUSTRALIAN DEVS.
The recent depression in the foreign market for gems bad a tamporary effect on the famous, sapphire fields in Australia. But the cloud appears to have passed. The operations for marketing) Australian Rems through French firm of buyers have been resumed, though in a somewhat modified farm as regards pro- gress payments for output. Since the Agreement for such control of the marketing of Queensland sapphires and black opals came into operation a few months ago £36,000 has been paid out for gems. Indeed, the halt in purchas- ing was largely due to the fact that the supply of high-class gems had exceeded expectations. An amount of £5,000 which was cabled out from the purchasing agent was absorbed within a month. Further credits have been provided, and the firm's representative has returned to Sapphire Town, Queensland.
FLYING AS CHEAP AS MOTORING.
The cost of conducting com- mercial aviation services in the Northern States of Australia has worked out at a little, if any. thing, above the average cost of operating a three-seater motor- Car over roads in the same territory. An interesting state- ment as to costs of commercial fying was made by the Chair- D3D of the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Ser- vices Ltd. at a recent mesting. He stated that an Aero Dyak machine had flown sevan thon- sand faar hundred miles in one hundred and eieren hours with
two
hundred and eighty-five passengers, and the cost of fuel, oils, and petty expenses worked at 48-in the air, or 8161. a mile. Exclusive of the pilot's salary the cost for carrying each passenger *M 4/id. a mile. A.B.E. 2.E. machine bad flown 6,370 miles, Iwas in the air ninety-eight hours, and had carried two hundred and ninety-six passengers. The cost in this case had been állan hour, nrad. & mile.
£3,000 BECOMES £75,000. For the extension of municipal offices. Blackpool Council bas decided to have block of business premises for £75,000. Thirty-six rears ago the progerty was offer-- ed to the corporation for £8,000.
