STATISTICS."
Lloyd's Register of Shipping" has issued a statistical summary of vessels totally lost, broken up. condemned. &c., relating chiefly to 1920. The tables show that in 1920 the gross reduction in the effective mercantile marine of the world amounted to 585 vessels of |657,554 tons, excluding all vessels of less than 100 tons. Of this total, 370 vessels, of 518,595 tons, were steamers, and 215, of 138- 959 toas, were sailing vessels. Strandings and similar casualties, which come under the term
wrecked," appear as the chief causes of disaster. To such casualties are attributable 45,5 per cent, of the lossas ol steamers, and 45.1 per cent. of sailing vessels.'
