COMMERCIAL NEWS.

INDUSTRIES IN... GHINITÀNG. Thu Yi Chục Tour Hu facturing · Co. was formerly located east of Kingshanho, Crinklang, where it was establish-. ed in 1917. With a capital of $300,000, it was later transferred to Chin Kee. 300 employeen wore smployed in thirteen mills. The daily output amounted to 2,000 fuacks. Owing to the recent in- creased price of wheat and the consequent decreased demand, the operations of the Compan †suspended last March. It is now reported that the machinery is under repair, and that work will recommence shortly.

the Chambers for consideration. COAU Y, DI

Mr. Summer Hunter, of the North Eastern Marine Engineer- ing Company. Limited, of Wall- send and Sonderland, is not quite so convinced that the sisam« driven, coal-fired vessel has had ita day, so are some of the so- thusiasts for oil fuel and internal- combustion engines. Coal, be says, is identified with the pro- spority of Great Britain and the British Empire, but-its valua has been depreciated by the competi- tion of oil as a motive power. The recent coal strike gave oil its opportunity, and it now re- mained to be seen whether coal wonki continue to be the basis of the wealth of the country and the Empire. He believed that it would, and that, gives cheaper coal, the industry would regain ... its pre-eminence, This pro- feminence had been shakan re- cently, but he did not think the future of coal has been seriously prejudiced. If it were, the In- dustrial supremacy of the Empire would be shaken toits foundations. The day of the coal-burning steam engine was not over. The fatore of ship propulsion depended on sconomy, and the most econom- ical methods would be sought out by shipowners. That there are shipbuilders, as well as ship- owners, not to speak of angin- eers, who are inclined to be restrained in their opinions re- garding the passing of cost and steam is evident from the cauti- oas policy which they are áll pursuing. A great deal has been said about the advantages of sil se a fuel in shipyard furnaces, and we have had šaura interesting references to the use of gas in the same capacity. Teach case there is no denying the efficiency of the newer methods, Ent we are sometimes apt to forget that we are living in a period of dear coal, and that, in anticipating the future of other heating agents. we must compare them with cośl at its cheapest, and ́ not at its dearest We must also rèmem- ber that gas is produced from coal, and that, therefore, its cost mustalways fupetuate with that of cal So while the new agents are of extreme importance, and may some day have infuences of revolutionary character, coal is still the basis of our shipbuilding aud engineering industries, a well as "of steel-making and general manufactures. The time bas not yet come when ship- yards, at any rate, can afford to Ido without it.
