JAPANESE TRADE-WITH-

The Lyons Chamber of Com- merce is disturbed at the nowa that Japan intends to take ad- vantage of the Washingtan Con- ference to demand the extension to Indo-China of the Customs Agreement of August, 1911. which give her the privilege of the minimum tariff for imports into France and Algeria. The extension would place the Lyons ailk industry in an awkward position. The industy has end- fered much by the war and would find it very difficult to cope with Japanese competition In Indo-China. The Chamber of Commerca, therefore addreswd to the Premier, before his departure for the United States, a note emphasising the gravity of the danger and suggesting to him the creation of a special tariff for Indo-China, adapted to her geographical position.

TRADE WITH CHINA. The Commercial Counsellor at Shanghai, Mr. H. E. Fox, CM G., has notified the Department for Overseas Trade that the majority of United Kingdom manfactur- ers who communicate with him direct saking for the names of suitable firms to act as agents for the sale of their products in China do not accompany their enquiries by catalogues, price lists or illne tration of their goods and even when these are sent the number ́s usually limited to one. at the most two copies. The Commer- cial Counsellor points out that considerable delay is frequently incurred on this account, as be has to send a copy of the enquiry with catalogue round to one firm at a time with a request that, if the business does not interest them, they will return the cata- logue. It may also occur that a catalogue gets mislaid when going the rǝands in this way. Mr. Fox therefore suggests thin United Kingdom manufacturers when forwarding him enquiries for agencies, more particularly__in the case of engineering special ities, abould send at least six copies of their catalogue or illustrations for distribution amongst local firma in Chins. Attention has recently been drawn by the Commercial Counsellor to the desirability of quoting prices in such publications even if they are only approximate. Whils United Kingdom manufacturers sod traders may, if they wish. communicate directly with His Majesty's Commercial Diplomatic and Consoler Officers abroad in regard to any particular item of commercial intelligence upon which they may require inform- ation, it is desirable that such enquiries should in the first in- stance be direced to the Depart- ment of Overseas Trade in order | to avoid delay in cases in which the Department is already in possession of the required in- formation.
