A prominent shipowner has something to say in the Syren end Shipping about the quality of British workmanship. On this all-important question experience haa, he says, shown that British yards are still unrivalled. Re- paire done abroad may have been cheap, and they may have been done quickly, but in many cases they have been far from satisfac- tory in the long run. He was certain that shipowners in gen- eral would welcome the opport- unities of having their vessels taken in hand at home. For that reason he confidently anticipated the recovery of most of the trade lost in the past year or so. But

MOTOR-SHIF CONSTRUCTION IN GERMANY. Shipowners and shipbuilders cannot fail to be interested in the

programme of motorship construction upon which some of the leading German Arms have embarked. AI the Deutsche Werft, at Hamburg. no fewer than ten motor vessels are on order. It is noteworthy that, as regards both half and engine construction, these new ships follow very closely the lines of many British and Scandianvian motor vessels, and standardiza tion has been adopted on so ex- tensive scale. Two types are being built, one to carry 8,000 tons of cargo, and the other 6,800 tons in addition to a few pas- sengers, and the machinery is the same in all cases, comprising two engines of 1,550 i.b.p. givingTM" speeds of 11 and 114 knots for the two classes of vessel respec- tively.
