The New York Journal Đặ Commerce says that advices received at Washington disclosa that Germany is employing 03- pecial efforts at the present time tp reconquar her tropical lands, at least commercially. At the same time steel beams were offered at 1,980 marka c.i.f.. Calcutta, which at the present rate of exchange would repre- sant about one-balf the price quoted by American manufactur- ing companies. Quotations of English firms approximate the American prices, but are slightly lower.

ITALIAN-JAPANESE SILK ALLIANCE

In reply to suggestion made in the spring of this year by the President of the Balian Silk As- sociation to the Japanese Seri- cultural Society for the forma- tion of an Italian-Japanese Silk Alliance with the object of ad- justing the price of silks, the Japanese Society expressed inability to act upon the sugges tion, as it was busily engaged in contriving remedial measures for the trade which was in a state of chaos. As independent Raw. Silk fastitute will be established at the Peace Exhibition to be held next spring under the au- spices of Tokyo Pretecture, and sume silk merchants express the opinion that it will be advisable to take the opportunity to hold an International Silk Conference. Accordingly, the proposed form3-- tion of ar. Italian-Japanese Silk Alliance has come to the front again.

YAWATA TRONWORKS.. According to the Mainichi, 243.571 kilogrammes of pig iron and 297,389 kilogrammes of steel were produced at the Yawata Ironworks from April of last year to the end of March of the cur rent year. In the same period. 192,000 kilogrammes of steel were sold. 105.369 kilogrammes re- maining unsaleable. Of the 105,369 kilogrammes plus a little over 30.000 kilogrammes brought forward from the preceding year, 9,000 kilogrammes of tin iron were sold during August and father more than 10,000 kilo- rammes during September in virtue of the brisk tone in the domestic market since August. There remained 115,000 kilo- grammes or more unsold at the lead of September.
