£178,000,000 BAYER. Contracts to the value of ap proximately £338,000,000 were Cancelled as the result of the armistion, said Mr. Hilton Young in Parliamentary reply. The saving effected was approximately £173,000,000.

JAPANESE RAILWAYS. According to various reports derived from official as well as anomofal sonroes, it appears that the Japanese authorities are contemplating the rebuilding of the whole Japanese railroad system of 8,000 miles, at a cost of $200,000,000, approximately £30 000,000, at the ordinary Tals of exchange. The new lines are to be of standard gauge. Japan is also in the market for large quantities of electrical equipment,-

KOREAN INDUSTRIES. Борев are being expressed among leading Koreana regarding the Korean Industrial investiga- tion Commission. The Korean Industrial Conference, which in cludes almost all the leading Koreans as representatives, was opened at the Central Y.M.C.A. Hall at Seoul, and passed a 7090- lation to be submitted to the Government-General, asking for the definite settlement of the industrial policy of Korea.

COTTON TRADE AND INDIAS IMPORT DUTIES.

In reply to representatives of the Lancashire cotton trade who waited upon him at the House of Commons with reference to the Indian

import duties, Mr. Montagu said that to retrace their step of giving India fiscal inde- pendence would be fatal to the interests of the Empire and to Lancashire trade. Iwill be- tween India and Lancashire would become so acute as to jeopardise seriously the trade between the two countries for a long time to come. The Secretary of State for India added that they should make their appeal to the Government of India and to the Fiscal Commission which would [decide the fatora tariff.

FINANCING SIBERIAN TRADE.

An understanding has been reached between the Bank of Korea and the Society for Promoting Russo-Japanese Trade with regard to the supply of fonds. Acting on information from the Bank of Korea, the representatives of the Society are to proceed to the capital soon to fix definite terms in an interview with the deputies of the bank and of the Russo-Japanese Com- mercial Company. According to reports appearing in the Japanese papers, the terms already red provide that only small sums of money should be lent at first, though the limits of *C- commodation are Got decided apon: the Russo-Japanese Commerical Company is to be responsible for the money lent. Financing will probably be in the form of the discount of drafts at 60 days' sight at a com- paratively low rate, and so forth.. When ultimate tems are settled, negotiations will be opened with the Specie Bank as well for its co-operation.
