THE HYPOTHEC OCTOPUS," The Hypothec. The terms are the same as those on which the Yamanashi and Saga Agricultural and Industrial Banks were previously annexed. This is in pursuance of the Gov. ernment's plan for the Hypothec Bank to absorb all the Agri- cultural Banks.--Japan Chronicle.

TEXTILE TRADE OF MANCHURIA. The gradual growth of the population and standard of living in Manchuris, especially in and around Mukden, the capital, has created an increased demand for textiles, and since the Armistice quite a number of foreign firms have opened-branches in the in- terior, says a trade journal. The chief demand in the textile line is for cotton towels. Before the war Great Britain came second to Japan in this trade, but had dropped from 35 to 20 per cent. by 1919. As the Japanese towels are principally buckaback, and as the Chinese favour British goods because of their superior quality. there is a splendid prospect for the British suppliers to recapture a big share of the market. What is absolutely necessary, however, is to appoint thoroughly reliable and pushful agents, and to provide sufficient stocks at readily avail- abte points from which deliveries could be made promptly. Hucka. backs measuring 13 in. by 33 in. 14 in. by 32 in. and 12 in. by 30 in., would find a ready sale, Japanese towels are imported in bales, each containing 200 dozen towels, which are of two sizes and
Iwo qualities only-first quality 13 in. by 33 in., and second quality 12 in. by 28 in-and the local trade is given two months" credit with a 3 per cent discount for cash. In 1919 Chins proper imported 1,099,206 dozen towels, vained at £218,500, and Man- churis took 322,758 dozen, valued at £77.175. Jenos enter largely into the dress of Makden natires: but at present this trade is ex- clusively in the bands of the Japanese, and if British manu- facturers wish to compete it will be necessary to maintain stocks in Shanghai, whither Mukden buyers often resort, these buyars being disinclined to buy goods without inspection. It is largely this disinclination to buy blind- feld that gives the Japanese their opportunity.
