YAWATA" IRONWORKS, The Yawata Ironworks is now ongrossed in the study of how-to- cut down producing expensee with the decline in the price of Irop. The Asoki expects that some-plan will be resched in the near future. The same journal quotes Mr. Hattori, Chief Engineer of the Iron-works, as | stating that the Ironworks have in view the use of electrio or gaa power for all their machinery as one step in economy. At present enormous quantities of coal ato used, and this is a great element in the high cost of production, besides)"hécessitating the em- ployment of a large number of hands. When the second arten- sion of the Works was mooted this improvement was suggested and would have been adopted but for the outbreak of the European war. If the whale of the ma- chinery in electrified, the workers can be reduced by over half, it is thought, and as the present pay call is Y1,000,000 or so a month ¥6,000,000 could be economised in

vix mouths. Gus power would be produced from the gas generatedy in the malting furnaces. Assum-) og that 500,000 tons of pig iron ara produced a year by using the six furnaces at present installed. 5,000,000 cubic metres of gas will be obtained; and, supposing that 40 per cent, of that gas be used að fuel, 3,008,000 zubic metres can be emplyed as nolive power. Mr. Hattori -xpresses the intention to prose- rue the plan, as surrounding ircumstances enable the urchase of the DCC288813 machinery.

MINING IN SHANTUNG,

It is reported in the vernacular ɔress that the coal mine at Tze- chwan (Yatingchen) Shantung, is to be operated by Sino-Japanese nterprise with a capital of 6,000,000, which bas been equally ubscribed by the Shantung Provincial Government and various Japanese firms. The mine has an area of about 500 15, and is reputed to possess rich seams. These are 7 ft. 5 in. in width, and run in parallel lines in twenty- four layers.
