A new bearing material, known as gonelite, has been perfected, which, used in, main besrints, crank pin bearings and similis places, is claimed to largely eliminate the troubles which come from improper lubricatión. Although it works better-when properly lubricated, it is said that genulite can be used without say. labrication whatever. "It is the. result of years of research By the Research Laboratory, of the General Electric Company to produce jost such a material and a being placed on the market by the International General Elec- trie Company. Genelita consists of a high-grade synthetic bronze baving about 40 per cènt, of its volume of powdered · graphite, avenly distributed throughout its mass... It is made by pressing the Ingredients in a heavy metal mold as near to final dimensions sa possible and subjecting them to heat. This clamps the graphits so firmly into the mass that it will not wash out, even when the bearing is labricated. Though the characteristics of genelite are quite different, it looks like bronze when it is finished, One of its most important features is that it is porous. Due to this fact it is able to absorb as much as 241⁄2 per cent. by weight of oll Thus it is possible in certain high speed instances to apply the oll to the outside of the bushing, from which it is carried by capil lary attraction to the bearing surface. The ability of bear- ings made from this material to withstand wear and rough • (usage in said to be amaring. This was demonstrated in the case of a well-known make of automobile, the crack pins of which were equipped with gene- lite, the main bearings "with babbitt bushings. Examination after car bad been driven 20,000 milas showed the main bearings and shaft to be very-badly worn while the crank pins were barely polished and the gezelite in the large ends of the connecting rods had scarcely come to a fall' soat, -Shipping and Engineering.
