an abnormal 006; motivity is Ex- pected to appear in October. Much cannot be expected · for quotations, however, for the belief obtains of American quorations being reduced. There have been tremendous orders from the Yawsia Ironworks owing to the lowering of the selling prices and the reform of discount ratas, about 15,000 tond to 16,000 tons being sold up to the end of August.

COAL FOR STEAM-RAISING.

The investigations of Mr. D.. Brownlie have thrown a musb- needed light on the use of coal for steam-raising. He has divided the existing boiler installations of the United Kingdom into thre classes---bad, avarage and highly eficiant-10 per cent. falling into the first class, 85 per centrinio the second and 5 per e-nt into the third. With watertube boilers the efficiency of the bad class lis 61. per cení, of the average class 69. per cent. and of the highly efficient 82 per cent, while with Lancashire boilers the corresponding figurem. are 49, 60 and 79 per cent. If 75 million tons is taken as 'the minimum amount of coal used annually for steam-raising the: scope for economy is enormous, for even an overall increase of 10W per cent, would mean a saving of 74 million tons annually. Mr. Brownlie's facts and figures, SAYS [an expert, are well worth the careful study of all who are seriously interested in fuel economy. They show the enor- mous possibilities'in this direc- tion which are actually' within our grasp if we will only avail ourselves of the knowledge which already exists. No new and revolutionary discoveries STO required for their realization. The problem of the future which awaits solution is how to stimulate the practical interest of the owners of steam-raising plant through- out the country. For steard raising in Great Britain the cheapest form of fuel is coal or coke if it is used under resson- bly sciantific conditions, and so long as this is the case the use of fuels of bigber availability will De economically practicable only lunder very special enaditions.
