ITALIAN REINFORCEMENTS REACH SILESIA.

The Premier, Mr. Meighan, has received the resignations of all a letter from Mr. de Valera specifically reaffirming the claim, and Mr. Lloyd George asked the emissaries to warn Mr. de Valera of the his Ministers as a preliminary to the reconstruction of the Cabinet, very serious effect of such a clause, and offered to consider the letter details of which will be announced early next week. is expected as undelivered in order to allow Mr. de Valera time for reconsidera- that Parliament will be dissolved immediately afterwards. tion. Nevertheless, Mr. de Valera has now published the letter in its original form. Mr. Lloyd George must accordingly cancel arrange-: ments for the conference at Inverness next week and consult his colleagu-s on the course of action necessitated by the new situation. Mr. Lloyd George emphasises that the Government canoot reconsider the position. Government acceptance of the conference on the basis of Mr. de Valera's claim, would constitute official re- cognition of the severance of Ireland from the Empire and ita existence as an independent fepublic, and entitle fr. de Valera to decare as of right acknowledged by the Government that, in pre- terence to association with the British Empire, he will pursue closer association by treaty with some foreign Power. Only one answer was possible to such a claim. The great concessions which the Government made to Irish feeling in order to secure a lasting settle- ment deserved a more cenerous response, but hitherto every advance has been made by the Government. Sinn Fein has not come a single ssep to meet them, but has merely reiterated, in phrases of emphatic challenge, the letter and spirit of their original claim.
