lago gave an answer to the Chi- nese Government, advising that the Ministers at Peking of the Powers had submitted the mat- ter to their respective home Gov- eraments. But among the Min- isters there being those who have not yet received instructions in this connection from their owo Governments, no definite reply has been given to the Chinese Government by the Diplomatic Body. It appears, however, that the Powers ate on the whole inclined to agree to the proposal in principle.
INTERNATIONALISM BAD
FOR MIXES.
A black prospect awaits the lead mining industry, secording tos writer in the Mining Journal, if action contemplated by the In- ternational Labour Office in Octo- ber comes into effect. This action is the prohibition in the affiliated countries of the use of white lead, for the manu- facture of which 20 per cent. of the world's supply of metallic lead is required. So serious is the proposal," says this writer, that it merits the earnest con- sideration not only of all interest- ed in the lead mining industry, bat also of the State, the user of lead in any form, every factory and bouse owner who ever has to make use of paint. "The pro- posal is virtually asking-on-to- close out Emnire mines in favour of control of paint prices and lead supplies by foreign countries. It is asking us to surrender the sources of supply which gave us all our lead during the late war in favour of possibly hostile, and certainly profiteering. Conti- nental countries. It is asking us to sacrifice the £20,000,000 of capital invested in the Australian ruines and their appurtenances, the livelihood of 150.000 persons directly or indirectly dependent upon the Empire lead industry and our independence of catside soures of supply. All this, for- sooth, because the International Labour Office does not care to go to the trouble of framing simple preventive regulations, which would be entirely adequate to the prevention of painters, sickness, but prefers to take the dramatic jine."
