SCEZ CANAL.
Wax
At the annual meeting of the Suaz Canal Company, it stated that the general shipping movement of 1920 consisted of 4,009 passages, representing a tatal net tonnage of 17,574,657 tons, and showing an increase as compared with the year 1919 of 23 passages and 1,560,855 tons, or 9.75 per cent. but compared with 1913, there was still a decrease of 1.076 passages and 2459,227 toas, or 12.27 per cent. The fact that there had been an increase in the average duration of the |passage was das to an exceptional cause, a large number of vessels being unable daring the last months of the year to proceed at night time owing to the difficulty which some arms experienced in supplying searchlights on ac- count of a strike of electricians.
Was announced that the directors contemplated a reduc- tion of 25 centimes per ton in the transit dues. The quantity of goods carried had increased by

approval of the new board, according to Washingtoo mail adv ces. It was explained, that ing of the smaller vessels and the difficulties encountered in dispos- coal burners in the American markets have led the present Board to clear the way for their sale abroad. Tentative plans for paring down the Government's merchant fleet throngh sale over- seas, officials said, contemplate the disposal of the wooden ships. the slower moring type of vessels of 5,000 and 6,000 deadweight tons and less, and larger coal burning craft, including some of the former German vessels taken over during the war, but regarded as less serviceable to American needs then some other types. Among the important decisions new Board is whether the Government is to attempt to sell its mercbant fleet to private owners as quickly as possible or to operate the ships fratil they can be sold gradually as marketconditions permit. Other problems awaiting solution are the ultimate disposition of the giant former German liner Lavisthan, now tied tip in New York, ratification of the working agree- meute between the Hamburg- American Lide and the Ship and Commerce Corporation of New York and the North German Lloyd and the United States Mail Steamship Company, and the question of the establishment of preferential railroad rates for. commodities moving overland to and from American vessels, The question of the sale of intoxicants on American passenger Hoers" also is expected to be brought 'before the new Board.
